However, experts are predicting that the USA can overtake world leaders Japan and Germany in solar power market and reclaim their position at the top. These experts also agree that in order for the U.S. to successfully reclaim its leadership position, continued government investment in this emerging technology market is required.
Affordable solar power generation will increase 10 to 100 times in volume over the next ten years, according to Eicke Weber, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg, Germany,.
"In the coming years, we will see a changing of the torch," Weber said. "The biggest market, the most exciting market, should be the United States."
Government rebates, like the ones in Germany, are essential if the US is to once again become the world leader in affordable solar power generation. U.S. policymakers at the state and federal levels are being urged to heed the German example.
Japan, in contrast, has seen a dramatic decrease in market share following a decision to retract government subsides. Not a wise move! Spain has overtaken them in the pv solar market.
The USA, with its history of technological innovation in the field of affordable solar energy has some major decisions to make.
With the combined powers of innovation and government investment, the U.S. is well positioned to bounce back as a leader in affordable solar power. Failing that, the country that was once a shining beacon in the quest for renewable alternatives could be left behind.
