Solar cells have many uses. But they're most useful electricity from the grid is unavailable, such as in remote locations.

A solar power cell consists of two or more thin layers of semiconducting material, most commonly silicon, although bio plastic products are being produced which will reduce the price of solar panels considerably.

When the solar cell is exposed to light, electrical charges are generated.

Now for the technical part....

Electrons are knocked loose from their atoms, allowing them to flow in a certain direction which is known as a current.

Because there are metal contacts on the top and bottom of the solar cell, we can draw that current off to use externally.

Many applications now use this technology.

For example, satellites that orbit the earth use these solar panels. Handheld calculators, wrist watches and water pumping applications.

There are great little solar panels that power mobile phones, ipods and games consules.
