Free Solar Energy System For The Vatican
A free solar energy system has been generously donated to the Vatican by German solar giants Solar World. I say generously because I'm sure the Vatican could afford their own solar power with the riches at their disposal.
However, this could be a stroke of marketing genius by Solar World as the Vatican represents millions of Catholics around the world.
And what will this free solar energy system contain? Well, the large $1.5 million solar array will contain 2700 panels and will be replacing the crumbling cement roof tiles of the Paul VI auditorium with the latest photovoltaic cells which will convert sunlight into electricity.
Since the German-born Pope was elected in 2005, Benedict XVI has made efforts to conserve global resources and has openly criticized the "unbalanced use of energy" in the world.
The cells will generate enough power to light, heat or cool the hall, the Vatican engineers say.
Setting an example
Last year the Pope urged Christians not to squander the world's resources which are rapidly running out.
It seems now that the Vatican is setting an example to the rest of Italy - which has been slow in embracing solar power despite having much sunshine - and the Catholic world at large.
Last year he said environmental damage was making "the lives of poor people on earth especially unbearable".
When the 6,000-seat hall is not in use, the surplus energy will be fed into the Vatican power network.
The Vatican is now looking into more buildings it can adapt to use the free energy from the sun.
