Due to its high levels of sunshine, California solar power has some of the greatest potential in the world to make a difference to its inhabitants. Yet only 1% of homes and businesses are built incorporating solar panels. But the times are achanging.... Those sunny Californians have always been known as forward thinkers and California has already started towards creating a mainstream solar power program where all its people can contribute and benefit. The California solar power initiative includes the Million Solar Roofs bill established in 2006. This was set up to build and install a million solar roofs within ten years. A huge task indeed, but one which the Californian people believe is possible. And with the infrastructure in place, their aim of making solar power cost-competitive with fossil fuel-generated electricity, is no longer a distant dream. According to the California Building Industry Association, more than 150,000 homes are built in California each year. So, in the region of 1.5 million homes will be built in the next ten years, in the outlying areas, and with solar panels incorporated into the houses. Add to this the new power plants, shopping centers etc and as you can see, the potential is phenomenal. And when you add in the Californian rebate program then you can see that solar energy in California has a rosy future indeed. Its absolutely perfect for solar panels. Within the next decade, Los Angeles could easily generate at least five percent of its energy needs from solar panels. And when you consider that LA accounts for 10% of the state’s entire electricity usage, Los Angeles has to be at the forefront of the California solar power dream of building a million solar roofs in ten years.
