California and New Jersey, for example, offer rebates and incentives for residential solar power systems that are more appealing than anything offered to Arizona residents.
However, that's about to change...
After watching many less sunny states plough forward with solar initiatives, Arizona is finally to expand its use of solar power dramatically in the next few years, with a minimum of 5% of the state's energy by 2025 to come from projects like rooftop panels.
With Arizona's energy demands growing at a furious rate, the need for alternative sources of power is of the utmost importance.
"It's just a prime place for solar. It's the best in the United States, there's no doubt," said Larry Kazmerski, director of the National Center for Photovoltaics at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo.
Meeting the targets set out by various governing bodies means that more rooftop panels will be popping up on homes.
There are even proposals for communities to have solar panels on every rooftop which would connect to one another and the whole system would tie to a main grid.
